GCSE results day can be a nerve-racking day for many people and whether you’re celebrating or slightly disappointed with your results, it is important to remember that exams don’t define you. They don’t define your future. Ultimately, it’s up to you on how you get yourself up, brush yourself off and go after the career that you want.
For many, by the time results come through, you already have a plan, which A-Levels you’re taking or which college you’re going to. But if you’re still unsure, didn’t quite get the grades you expected, or have simply changed your mind, you’re not alone.
Here are the most common routes after GCSEs 👇
A-Levels
The more “traditional” academic route. Usually 3–4 subjects studied over two years.
Heavily exam-based and often chosen if you’re aiming for university.
Can be studied at sixth form or at a college.
Vocational qualifications focused on real-world, practical skills.
Coursework-based (less about exams), covering areas like business, creative media, health & social care, sport and more.
Can be studied at both sixth forms and colleges, and often mixed with A-Levels.
Earn while you learn. You’ll work in a real job, gain hands-on experience, and study towards a recognised qualification.
You get paid, you build in-demand skills, and you start growing your career network from day one.
Delivered by training providers and Linkedin to employers who are hiring.
Katie’s story
Take graduate apprentice, Katie Lawrence, for example. She started A-Levels but quickly realised the classroom route wasn’t right for her. Instead, she joined The Juice Academy as a Content Creator apprentice and hasn’t looked back since.

"I chose a content creation apprenticeship over A-levels because I knew early on that I wanted to take a hands-on approach to building my career. Instead of continuing to be stuck in the classroom environment, I wanted to be out in the real world learning directly from professionals and gaining practical experience in an industry that I've always had a passion for.
"My apprenticeship has given me exactly that! I've been given real opportunities to create, collaborate and grow. I've networked with the most inspiring people. Most importantly, I found a route to success in the best way possible for me. I've progressed more than I ever could have imagined and I have been able to lay a strong foundation for my future, whilst most of my peers are still figuring things out. I saw how many companies look for experience over qualifications and took a different, more practical route to finding success in my career.
"My advice for someone who is starting an apprenticeship is to show up every day. Show up with passion. Show up when things get hard. Show up when you feel like giving up. Show up for yourself and for your future!
"Your dream isn't going to come alive by itself. Take every opportunity that comes your way, sometimes the rockiest of roads lead to the most beautiful destinations."
Katie’s story isn’t unique and it highlights something important for employers too…

Reading about GCSE results day and the journey that follows reminded me how moments of reflection can help steady us as we face new beginnings. In the early calm before a busy day, many find comfort and focus with surah yaseen, a simple pause that brings clarity and peace. For those familiar with surah yaseen in india, it’s one of the gentle traditions that reflects how islam in india is lived through quiet strength and mindful presence.
This post is a great reminder that career paths are rarely linear and that results day is just one small step in a much larger journey. I was actually discussing these very opportunities with my younger cousins earlier today as we were all getting things ready for iftar time london together. I read the article about why GCSE results day is just the start and it really made me think about how one moment does not decide your whole future. When I had to finish a long essay in school I felt stuck until I used Manuscript editing services that I personally used to help me fix mistakes and make my ideas clearer for others to read. That taught me good editing can make big tasks feel easier.
